We drove about an hour away to hike with friends along the river in Oirase Gorge. It was a drizzly day to start, but the rainforest made it extremely humid and moist. Lush vegetation and lots of moss.

A stone hut with a legend about a pretty young witch who once lived there and attacked passers-by. A side note: one of our favorite restaurants, Kappa Sushi (100 yen sushi that comes round on a conveyor belt, with special orders delivered via Shinkansen train) is named after Kappa. We thought he looked like a cute little turtle, but it turns out he's a river demon who eats children!

To round out the day, we went for dinner to a Yaki Niku restaurant (cook your own food on a grill in the center of the table). Note Ricky's booster seat attached to a chair on the floor :) We had a private room, so he was able to run around after he finished eating. Ricky and I shared rice and prime rib with an assortment of sides, including very fine kimshi. Rick grilled a variety of seafood, including squid, giant prawns, scallops (his favorite) and unidentifiable white rubbery something.
