Day 1: After flying from Aomori Airport, we drove to Otaru City for a brief walking tour.
We stopped at a fancy coffee shop to warm up before strolling the charming streets and canals.

Dinner at the famous Sapporo Bier Garten, even for us non-beer drinkers. We grilled "Genghis Khan" barbeque right on our table--lamb, onions, cabbage and Japanese pumpkin (like acorn squash with the skin on). The room was so smoky that they provided plastic bags for our coats and sweaters and bibs to protect us from BBQ splatter. But we still smelled like we'd been deep fried and required showers before bed.
