Shells

Ricky and I joined a friend for a day trip to the Asamushi Aquarium in Aomori. We saw amazing sea creatures, an enormous octopus, otters cracking shells, sea lions doing tricks for fish, and dolphins jumping through "hoopty-hoops." Ricky loved the hands-on pool where he could pick up shells, starfish, and other critters.

(not sure what this was)

Up for close inspection, but not in the mouth!

The next day, Dad bought a case of fresh local scallops.

He spent nearly an hour shucking them...

...but said the result was well worth the effort. Apparently, there's nothing like fresh grilled scallops. He shared his labors with our neighbors; I was content to document the occasion (although I do remember enjoying the taste of scallops in my pre-shellfish allergy days).
